What is Pind Daan?
Pind Daan is the sacred offering of pind — rice, barley flour, sesame and honey shaped by hand — to departed ancestors so their souls may find peace and liberation. In Gaya the rite is offered at the holy Falgu river, at the Vishnupad Temple, at Pretshila and Ramshila hills, and at the immortal Akshayavat. Each offering is made with the correct mantras, sankalp and vidhi as laid down in the shastras.
What is Shradh, and when is it performed?
Shradh is the act of honouring ancestors through tarpan, tila-tarpan and anna-daan. It is performed on the annual tithi (death anniversary) of the departed, during Pitru Paksha (the sixteen-day fortnight most auspicious for ancestral rites), on Amavasya, and at other suitable times.
